Mexico City-based Studio davidpompa recently launched its new Origo collection at Euroluce during last month’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. The Austrian and Mexican designer once again selected two unlikely materials, this time pairing black volcanic stone with the lightness and semitranslucence of white glass.

Consisting of two simple stacked spheres suspended by a black wire, the pendant format contrasts the porous texture of handmade recinto stone with the smooth surface of opal glass. The soft light emerging from the glass reflects onto the texture of the volcanic rock, revealing its relief and contour and creating a relationship between light and composition. Meanwhile, the wall lamp format flips the pendant horizontally on its side, bringing the play of light and shadows into a new context.

Origo— the Latin word for origin— refers in this case to the origin of the universe, “a specific point in time when everything begins.” Meanwhile, the Origo collection speaks to us about the interaction of light and darkness, and the balance of composition.

The recinto stone is a distinct and enigmatic material that is deeply rooted in Mexican culture. Made from solidified lava that has cooled naturally after a volcanic eruption, it was used by several Mesoamerican cultures for sculptures, kitchen utensils and architecture. The most iconic examples are the Mexican “molcajete,” the Mexican version of the mortar and pestle which is used to make foods such as guacamole. The studio has used recinto for previous projects – such as the sleek-looking Meta pendant light – to celebrate its roots in Mexican culture and design.
